Here is what we did today:
Math: Today we talked about
measuring area in cm squared. The concept is the same as Friday's lesson
in which they have to write a multiplication sentence for each shape.
We did some questions together and then they did some textbook work.
Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information
Spelling: Spelling Lesson 26 is due on Thursday and the test is on Friday.
Language: They finished
off their previous letter, self and peer edited and then started on
their next one in which they are writing about the rules and routines of
an existing game.

Math: Today we talked
about calculating the area of irregular shapes. We count them by putting
different symbols in the squares. We put an X for a completely full
square. We put half a circle for shapes that are half; these shapes
count as half (0.5). We put a * in all the rest of the shapes. We then
circled the stared (*) shapes that are more than half; these shapes
count as 1 whole. They should do these one at a time and then find the
total area. If they are having a hard time determining if it is more or
less than half I suggested they draw a dotted line from corner to corner
and then use their paper and put it up to the solid line. If they can
see the dotted line then it is more than half. If you cannot see the
dotted line than it is less than half. We are going to do some more work
on this concept tomorrow.
Spring Fundraiser assembly: Our
first prize for yesterday was an extra casual day and it was won by
Noah and William in Ms. Padovan's class! The prize for today was chewing
gum at school all day and that was Jasmeet in Ms. Hocevar's class.
Great work!

UOI: We worked on our review package from Friday. They will be finishing it throughout the week. We then talked about changing the speed of a moving object. We first talked
about how a parachute slows down a person falling. We watched a video in
order to understand this:
Next they learned that the parachute allows for the force of the air
resistance to be more than gravity which slows the person down. We also
talked about the speed at which a person drops depends on the weight of
a person. A sumo wrestler is going to drop faster than a small child.
We also talked about a kite and the air resistance involved in keeping
it up. We then talked about the aerodynamics of a sports car turning a
corner and how it allows the car to go faster than a mini-van turning a
corner. Finally we did an experiment with a parachute to see how to
falls with different items.
Homework and Important Updates
