Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Agendas/Morning Meeting

Language: We continued our novel study, “Heidi.” We read chapters 14 and 15 together. We made a lot of inferences about what could happen next in the book or how the characters are feeling.
Recess/Lunch

Math: Today we learned about improper fractions. To get this lesson started we reviewed mixed fractions and we discussed what an improper fraction could be. We learned that mixed number fractions and improper fraction are like twins that do not look the same. The denominator doesn't change and they represent the same things but the numerator and whole number makes them different. We used the cardboard pizza to practice improper fractions. Next, we learned how to convert a mixed number fraction to an improper fraction (steps in picture below). We did many examples together, then each student completed a worksheet and we took it up as a class. Next, we learned how to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number fraction (steps in picture below). This was a little tricky so we did many examples together and also completed a worksheet independently. We took up the answers as a class and I am very proud of all their hard work today!

Here is a youtube video that could help you with improper to mixed fractons:

Music: We did a sound scape with Ms. Ross' class.  Here is a link to our video:

Recess/Lunch

UOI: We started working on our summatives!
Homework and Important Reminders:
Please be at the school tomorrow for 8:30am as the bus leaves at 9am sharp. Bring disposable lunches and be in uniform as well!

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Agendas/Morning Meeting

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

Language: We continued our novel study, “Heidi.” We read chapters 12 and 13 together. We made a lot of inferences about what could happen next in the book or how the characters are feeling.

Math: Today we took up our homework from last night. Also, we learned about mixed number fractions. We did quite a few examples on the board on how to describe mixed numbers.
We described these mixed fractions like pizzas. The denominator is how many slices are in that pizza, the whole number is how many whole pizzas there are and the numerator is how many slices of pizza are extra/don't make a whole pizza. Everyone had so much fun with this concept. We had some circle time and practiced with a game that had cut out pizza slices. We loved it so much! We ended the lesson with two practice worksheets.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: We continued to work on our debate and presented our case to each other!

Homework and Important Reminders:

For homework if some did not complete their in-class work they will be taking home their "Heidi" novel study book. Please ensure this book comes back to school on tomorrow in the same condition.

Monday Februay 26th, 2018

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Agendas/Morning Meeting

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

Language: We continued our novel study, “Heidi.” We read chapters 10 and 11 together. We made a lot of inferences about what could happen next in the book or how the characters are feeling.

Recess/Lunch

Math: Today we learned about equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different but show exactly the same amount. You can make equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number. We did a bunch of examples on the board together of how fractions may look different but can have the same value, for example: 1/2 and 6/12. We spoke about whatever you do to the numerator you must do the same to the denominator otherwise it will not be an equivalent fraction. The students completed a worksheet in class and we took it up all together. Once that was completed they tried to solve puzzles that included equivalent fractions represent in numbers and pictures.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: We continued to work on our debate.

Homework and Important Reminders:

For homework if some did not complete their inclass work they will be taking home their "Heidi" novel study book. Please ensure this book comes back to school on tomorrow in the same condition.

Friday February 23rd, 2018

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Agendas/Morning Meeting

Art: We continued our city skyline art from yesterday.

Language: We continued our novel study, “Heidi.” We read chapters 5 and 6 together. We made a lot of inferences about what could happen next in the book or how the character is feeling.

Recess/Lunch

Math: Today we reviewed fractions of a set and how to draw a picture to represent that fraction. We took up yesterday’s homework and did a few examples on the board. The students were separated into 4 groups and each group had a different activity. There was fraction bingo, fractions of a set flash cards, fractions of a set whiteboard practice and which fraction is larger card game. They had so much fun rotating between the activities.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: For today’s activity we discussed the different parts of a debate and why it was important to have a strong argument verses a weak argument. We watched a debate and discussed which  individual’s argument was based on facts and who’s was based on opinion. The students’ were divided into 2 groups and were told that they would have to debate which is a better place to live, the city or the country? We will continue this activity on Monday.

Homework and Important Reminders:

For homework they will be taking home their "Heidi" novel study book. Please ensure this book comes back to school on Monday in the same condition.

Thursday 22 February 2018

Anti-Bullying Day- Thursday February 22nd, 2018

Here is what we did today:

We started our day with the Cinderfella play! It was such a fun and educational event!

Morning Meeting/Agendas

Language:  Today we continued our novel study, "Heidi." We read chapter four together and the students answered some comprehension questions as a follow up activity. We continued creating our personal student dictionary with words from the novel that we are learning.

Recess/Lunch

Math:.  Today we learned about fractions of a set. This concept was really tricky so we practiced a lot together and with partners.  We know that fractions represent equal parts of a whole object/shape. Today we learned what fractions of a set look like. Below are the steps to help with homework:

For example:

2/3 of 12

Step 1:  You need to find what one set would be (1/3) so you take the total number and divide it by the denominator.

1/3 --> 12 divided by 3 = 4

Step 2: Now you can find the what 2/3 is by taking the quotient (4) and multiplying it by the numerator (2).

2/3 --> 4 x 2 = 8

So, the answer would be 2/3 of 12 = 8

***If they have to draw the set then the denominator is the number of rows, the quotient from step 1 is the number of columns! ***

*** If the numerator is less than 1 then you only need to complete step 1 to find the answer to the question!***

We practiced this concept with partners and really had fun!

Recess/Lunch

UOI/ART: Today we talked about the city skylines. We talked about how it looks balanced and the line of symmetry in the photo. We began creating our own city skyline and we will be using water on the markers to create a reflection. We are continuing this activity tomorrow.
