DAY 1: Remember the meeting on Zoom at 1pm! Hope to see you all there! 🙂

Hello my dear Grade 3s,
Each subject has a description of what you are learning today. You are responsible for reading it and following along everyday. Make sure you read the steps and information carefully. If you have any questions you can always ask me! You got this!!!

MATH:Before the break we started our probability unit! Now I know it has been some time since we did a math lesson so we are going to review the language of probability before we begin. When we talk about how probable it is for an event to occur we are asking is something is certain, likely, possible (equal chance or equally likely), unlikely and impossible to happen.

Here is an example of each:
CERTAIN: It is certain the sun will set in the evening.
LIKELY: It is likely I will eat lunch at noon today.
POSSIBLE: It is possible to land on heads when flipping a coin.
UNLIKELY: It is unlikely it will snow in the summer.
IMPOSSIBLE: It is impossible that my dog will drive my car.

Now this is all in word form, did you know that probability can be expressed as a fraction!
The numerator describes: what outcomes you are counting
The denominator describes: the total number of possible outcomes
For example: If I had a bag with 10 marbles inside it; 3 red, 2 green, 4 yellow and 1 blue. I want to know the probability of just the red marbles so, my numerator would be the number of red marbles in the bag and my denominator would be the total number of marbles. The fraction would be 3 out of 10 or 3/10.

Here is a link of a video that has a couple of examples, in this video it talks about percentages which we are not doing in Grade 3. All you need to know is how to write it as a fraction! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMiAbQ5yUDA

Here is another example:
Now, we can compare the fraction form to the word form.
Certain means 100% it will happen so as a fraction it would be 10/10
Likely means it most likely will happen so as a fraction is could look like 7/10 or 8/10 or 9/10
Possible means there is an even chance or 50% so half of a whole so as a fraction it would be 5/10
Unlikely means it probably won't occur so as a fraction it could look like 2/10 or 1/10 or 3/10
Impossible means it will NEVER happen so 0% so as a fraction it would be 0/10

For your homework today you are to complete the worksheet called Probability Words and Fractions. The first question asks you to match the word form to the fraction form. The second part of the worksheet you get to draw and colour in the marbles within the jars to represent the stated fraction OR you have to create a fraction to match the word form given.

LANGUAGE: Just like every Monday your task today is to complete Lesson 25 from your workbook. Please make sure you are spelling the list words correctly within each question.

Let's review the tip for this week:
The tip of the week is talking about adding suffixes (also called endings) to your root/base word. This ends up changing the words meaning or tense. (Remember words can describe a past or present action like walk or walked)

If your root word has a short-vowel before a consonant then you must double your consonant before adding your ending (suffix). Here is an example: Swim is your root word. It has the short-i sound and then the letter m so double the m and then add the -ing. --> Swim turns into Swimming

If your root word ends with the letter x then do not double the consonant. Example: Wax + ed = Waxed!

Our focus this week will be on suffixes so we are going to get a lot of practice on how to form them and use them properly when writing.

UOI: Today we are going to start our new unit of inquiry!!! This is one of my favourite units especially during this time of year. Does anyone know what season it is?? SPRING! It's the season where everything is starting to grow and bloom. Can anyone guess what our new unit is yet? You guessed it.. PLANTS AND SOIL!!!

Before we begin to explore this unit, I am going to explain what your task for this lesson is: You are to design the cover page for your UOI binder and complete your plants and soil wonders sheet!

I would like for you to please write down ONLY 3 wonders you have about plants and soil. Once you have done so I would like for you to please watch this read aloud. Click the link to listen to the book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-ie4bIb6hA

After listening to the book I would like for you to write down another 3 wonders you have about plants and soil. Awesome job! I can't wait to hear about these wonders!

Success Criteria for your cover page:
- Write your name on it!
- Make it colourful
- Must include drawings related to plants and soil

FRENCH: Learning goal: Brainstorm, use previous knowledge and make connections to build a new set of vocabulary words.

Success criteria: I can think about words relating to a new concept using previous knowledge and make connections.

We are starting our new unit about gardening and nature(le jardinage et la nature).
-Students will have to prepare a sheet of paper with:
· The date in French (they should be able to write in French independently: Lundi 23 mars 2020).
· The students write down the title as usually done in class: Le jardinage et la nature.
· The students should brainstorm using a bubble mind map (as usually done in class). Some hints for the brainstorm: what word does “jardinage” sound like? (“le jardin” – the garden), who does the gardening? What tools do we use? Verbs? Adjectives? Which parts of nature are related to gardening?
· As an extension, students can circle the words in the brainstorm that are nouns and underline the verbs and use a different colour to circle the adjectives.
-Students compare their brainstorm and the words they found to the example provided by the teacher (attached photo in email) and complete their brainstorm mind map accordingly.
-Students should go over their mind map a couple of times to make sure they can pronounce the words and remember their meaning.

Note: Keep your work in a folder where you can save all of your written work on lined paper and worksheets to bring it all back to school with you.

MUSIC: Welcome back to music class!  I hope you had a wonderful March break!  Later in the week I will be posting a video where you can sing vocal warm ups with me and favorite songs just like we do in music class but in your own home.  It will be fun!  Today for music class I would love for you to warm up your singing voices by composing your own vocal warm up like we do in class (such as "It is Monday" to do mi so do so mi do).  Then practice singing one of your favorite songs from music class such as "The Elevator Song." After you have done that please compose your own song or parody (a song with lyrics that you make up set to a familiar tune like "twinkle twinkle"). The song should be about how important it is to stay home right now and why.  An example of a song three brothers composed can be found  by googling "Ladner brothers stay home." Please write your song lyrics on paper.  You are welcome to email me the lyrics at amcmillan@stjudesacademy.com. When you are finished you can perform your song for your family! Feel free to send me a video! When you are finished you can have fun composing songs online on the song maker website which is: https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/

1.Compose your own vocal warm up.
2. Sing one of your favourite songs from music class.
3.Compose your own song or parody about the importance of staying home right now.
4.Compose songs on Song Maker

GYM: PE with Ms. V!
1.     Watch this YouTube video about the Benefits of Exercise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpcHLZhkm7U

Ms. V’s Teacher Talk: After watching that YouTube video, I hope you remember some of the conversations we have had about being physically active and the importance of exercise. Exercise is extremely important for creating a healthy body and a healthy lifestyle. While you are at home, it is important that you are active throughout all parts of your day to help you strengthen your muscles, fight illnesses and help you regain focus to complete more homework and learning tasks.

2.     Follow along with this exercise video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhCM0C6GnrY

Ms. V’s Feedback: Great job! How are you feeling? A little sweaty? Tired? Thirsty? Can you feel how fast your heart is beating? Those are your heart muscles working and becoming stronger to make sure the rest of your body is healthy too. Please make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day, especially after this workout and continue to be active throughout the rest of your day! 🙂
