Jump Rope for Heart Assembly: We had an assembly to learn about our new fundraiser. As a school we would like to raise $2,500!

UOI: Today we did a fun activity with the fractured fairytale we read yesterday. Each group was given a part of the story mountain that they had to fill in. After we wrote down our points in point form, we compared them to the story mountain we completed for the traditional fairytale. For homework, they were tasked with having to create a fractured fairytale using a story mountain.

Inquiry into Math: We took up our fraction review and practiced some of the concepts more. Then we played a fraction card game! This was great practice for converting improper and mixed fractions.

Inquiry into Language: Today we focused on the fairy tale formula. These are the aspects that make up a fairy tale, such as setting, characters, magic, problem and solution. We watched on video to help us understand exactly how important the setting is within a story.

Then we worked on filling in a worksheet independently. As a class, we completed the fairy tale formula for the classic fairy tale, Cinderella.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: Today we focused on the difference between a fractured fairy tale and a traditional fairy tale. We read the story of the 3 Little Pigs, we completed a story mountain together as a class.

Then we read two fractured fairy tales out loud. We absolutely loved the stories! A fractured fairy tale takes an old story and recreates it in a way; changing the story in an unexpected way; altering characters, or changing the perspective of who is tell the story. As a class, we compared the traditional 3 Little Pigs to the fractured fairy tale that we read.

Inquiry into Math: We reviewed improper and mixed fractions and how to convert a mixed to improper/improper to mixed. We have a better understanding now that we completed some more questions.

Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Math: Today we focused on comparing and ordering fractions. We worked together as a class to put the fractions in order from least to greatest and verse versa. We practiced converting improper fractions to mixed fractions so we could accurately place the fractions in order.

Some important tips to remember:
- If the denominator is the same, look at the numerator to put the fractions in order.
- There can never be improper fractions! Convert these to mixed fractions and then place them in order.

Silent Reading: We haven't engaged in silent reading in awhile and the students were very excited to get back into routine.

 

UOI: Today we focused on Fables. We learned that fables are short stories that teach us lessons which are called morals. We discussed the characteristics of this genre and then listed some examples. The students were divided into groups to read and interpret the fable.

UOI: We worked with our groups to create a skit about the fable they read. They presented this to the class.

Inquiry into Math: Today we learned about improper and mixed fractions.

Mixed Number Fraction contains both a whole number and a proper fraction. Example: 1½ (one and a half) An Improper Fraction is where the numerator (the top number) is greater than the denominator (the bottom number). 

We did many examples together and worked through the steps on how to convert them. This took us quite some time and are slowly getting the hang of it.

Inquiry into Language: We worked on our spelling workbooks and spelling sentences for Lesson 16. Once that was complete, we moved on to learning about two other types of figurative language. We focused on hyperbole and personification. We watched two videos and then worked on a worksheet.

Inquiry into Math: Today we started our lesson with a warm up activity. I wrote a question on the board and the students had 5 minutes to answer them. We had a lot of fun!

Then we focused on equivalent fractions! Equivalent fractions may look different, but they have the same value. You can make equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing both top and bottom by the same amount. You only multiply or divide, never add or subtract, to get an equivalent fraction. Whatever you do to the top you do to the bottom!
For Example: to find equivalent fraction of we multiply both numerator and denominator by 2 then we get equivalent fraction.

UOI: Today we focused on the genre of poetry! We looked at two poems and labelled the structure of the poem on the side. ABBA or ABCB. We looked at which words rhymed and which lines they were on. We continue both poems independently.
