Math: Today we continued to practice elapsed time. Since this concept is a tough one we really spent a lot of time invested in it today. We broke it down in a way that is easier to the students to visualize the time changing. You start by counting up your hours, then your minutes. If you have minutes that can be counted up by both tens and ones then you can separate it to make it easier.
For example:
Start time is 11:20am. End time is 1:15pm.
Count out the hours: 11:20am --> 12:20pm (That's 1 hour, we cannot go any farther because then it would be larger than our end time)
Count the minute in tens: 12:20 --> 12:30 --> 12:40--> 12:50--> 1:00--> 1:10 (50 minutes have passed)
Count the remaining minutes in one: 1:10 --> 1:15 (5 minutes have passed)
In total: 1 hour and 55 minutes is the elapsed time.
Depending on the question the students have to decide whether to count by 1s, 5s or 10s for the minutes.
By the end of the question majority of the class had a solid understanding of the method and found it easier to understand.
