Agendas/Morning Meeting

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

Language: We continued reading our novel "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We read chapter 8 now! We did a paragraph writing activity afterwards to reinforce the concept of proper paragraph writing. The students had to choose a topic, brainstorm 3 supporting ideas, write a topic and closing sentence and then write out their paragraph. We spoke about how it’s important to include detail such as more examples and adjectives in our writing. We also needed a reminder to include capital letters and proper punctuation.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we multiplying by 3 and 4s! We working together to figure out the multiples of both numbers. The students had an in class worksheet as practice and we took it up as a class.

I would suggest that you practice your multiplications at home. The best way to do this is flashcards. They can be printed off this website: http://www.timvandevall.com/math/free-printable-multiplication-flash-cards-for-kids/

Extra Worksheets: If you would like more practice!

Recess/Lunch

UOI: Today we wrote formal letter invitations to Grandpa’s Dance. This activity was based on the chapter in our novel studies book that we read today. The letter had to include: where the party was being held, what will they be doing, what will they be eating and what should they wear. It had to be in a letter format (with who it is to and who it is from) and had to be as polite as possible because it was a formal letter.

World Kindness Day

Dear SJA Families,

Kindness Day is celebrated nationwide annually, on the 13th of November.  It is a day to celebrate and promote kindness in all its forms. World Kindness Day falls on the same day and unites people in kindness globally.

On November 13th, St. Jude's Academy is celebrating World Kindness Day by encouraging all students to share  kind words to each other and unite as a whole school with their neighbours at Oakwood.  By bringing in $2, students can participate in a special World Kindness Day event by writing a kind message or quote on a leaf and then post it on our World Kindness Tree for all to see.   In addition to sharing their kind words, they will be supporting their neighbours at Oakwood and also be allowed to dress casually.

As part of a united world school, IB learners strive to be kind everyday. This year, we are looking forward to emphasizing and celebrating acts of kindness on Monday, November 13th and we hope everyone is able to participate in our World Kindness Day events!

Sincerely,

Trillian Taylor
Director of Transition Programming
Oakwood Academy

We started our day with an assembly where a few students got to present it to the entire school!

Great job to everyone in my class that presented the Guy Fawke's Poem.

Students were given time to begin Lesson 9 in their spelling workbooks. French was cancelled for today.

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

Language: We continued reading our novel "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We read chapter 7 now! We did an instructional writing activity; the students were given a passage from the novel and they had to write the steps to making a trough.

Recess/Lunch

We had our September Party (super delayed with all the things going on in October). We watched an episode of The Magic School Bus!

Math:. Today we multiplying by 2 and 5s!We played a game to practice skip counting called Circle up! Each person said one number while counting up in twos and fives. If you are the one to say the number 50 then you are out. We did this several times and we had so much fun! Next we did some work in the textbook. Everyone had a great understanding of the work!

I would suggest that you practice your multiplications at home. The best way to do this is flashcards. They can be printed off this website: http://www.timvandevall.com/math/free-printable-multiplication-flash-cards-for-kids/

Recess/Lunch.

UOI: Today we continued working on making our pioneer homes! The students created the outdoor lots to their homes and thoroughly enjoyed creating this craft!

Agendas/Morning Meeting

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

Language: We continued reading our novel "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We read chapter 6 now! We spoke about why they would trade fur for items and how that was like how we use money now. We worked on reflection questions based on chapters 5 and 6.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we multiplying by 1, 0 and 10s! We discussed many different strategies and did a ton of examples on the board! The students really had fun with this lesson, everyone was able to complete all the textbook questions without any assistance. Bravo class!

Multiplying by 1:

Pretend the 1 is like a mirror and the answer will always be the reflection if the other number (or with our math vocabulary “factor”). So, 5 x 1 = 5

Multiplying by 0:
Pretend the zero is like a black hole and it makes whatever factor that is being multiplied to it disappear! So, 3 x 0 = 0

Multiplying by 10:

We practiced a few different strategies for this one like repeated addition, skipping counting and using place value.

Recess/Lunch.

UOI: Today we starting working on making our pioneer homes! The students were very enthusiastic about this craft!

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Agendas/Morning Meeting

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

Language: We continued reading our novel "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We read chapter 5 now! We spoke about the cause and effect of situations. Like Laura and Mary took a bath on Saturday night (Cause) so the effect would be that Laura was very clean on Sunday. We completed a worksheet independently and once that was complete the students had some independent reading time.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we practiced skip counting! The students made connections to their patterning unit at the beginning of the year. We looked at hundreds charts and multiplication tables to find the multiples of certain numbers and how they are related to each other. They remembered how to count up and where to start at. The students really grasped this concept well.

Recess/Lunch.

UOI: Today we learned about how the inside of a pioneer home looked like. We read a story and discovered basically everything was wooden! We filled in a worksheet that had blanks all over the sentences. The students were encouraged to look for the key words in the sentences.

Everyone is very excited for our class trip tomorrow!! We can’t wait!
