Music: Please see Mrs. McMillan's blog for more detail. www.mrsmcmillanmusic.blogspot.com

Inquiry into Math: Today we learned about fractions of a set. We loved this lesson! This talks about the fraction of a set that we want to represent. We did many examples together as a class and then they were able to work on their homework.

We used fractions to represent pictures:
Here are the steps:

When drawing an array to represent the fraction of a set: the denominator is the rows and the quotient is the columns.

Indoor Recess/Lunch

UOI: We learned about the mystery genre. We discussed the elements of a mystery and reinforced those elements with our mystery activity! Our activity centered around the Mysterious Disappearance of the Hippopotamus. We read the first page out loud and the students set to work investigating and discovering the setting, plot, and characters involved in the mystery. Then they traveled around the school reading the suspect teachers' alibis. We had so much fun! The culprit was ..... MS. SAMUEL!

YEAR AHEAD DAY

Today was year ahead day so my class was with Ms. Samuel. Here is a link to her blog: https://mssamuelsja.blogspot.com/

I had the pleasure of having Ms. Hughes- Smith's Class. They were fantastic! Here is what we did today:

Gym: They boarded the bus and headed to the DOME! Please see Ms. Yustin's blog for more detail.  http://sjaayustin.blogspot.com

Ice Breaker: We played a game called "Autograph Please!" The students had to ask their peers if they have ever done particular activities. If they said yes, they write down their names. If they said no, they ask them about another activity.

Inquiry into Language: We wrote acrostic poems using our names. All the words in the poem had to be adjectives that describe them. We practiced by creating an acrostic poem for me first and then we each created our own.

Recess/Lunch

French: They had fun with Mme. Stella. Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail. https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com

Inquiry into Math: Today we started the lesson playing "Count up!" This games allows them to practice their multiplication times table. They take turns and have to count up to a particular number. When it lands on that number that person is out!

We played "Count up" a couple of time and then we created multiplication fortune tellers. We loved this activity, especially playing with them after!

Recess/Lunch

UOI: Today we did a fun creative writing activity. One student wrote down a sentence and passed the sheet of paper to the person next to them. Once the student next to them read the sentence then, they folded the paper and wrote another sentence. We each had a turn to add to the story. Once, it was complete we shared our silly stories!

Fun Activity: We played broken telephone! Our sentences that we shared were about our day today. Fun, Fabulous Grade 3!

WELCOME BACK

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail. https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com

Music: We had music with Ms. MacMillan.

Inquiry into Language: Today we reviewed adjectives! We knew that an adjective is a word that describes a noun. We practiced writing descriptive sentences by showing and not telling. How that works is by instead of saying "He was angry" we practiced adding details like what they looked like or how the person acts when they feel that particular emotion. For example: "His face was bright red and steam was rushing from his nose." We really enjoyed coming up with sentences together as a class and then worked on a worksheet independently.

Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Math: Today we continued to talked about Fractions! We used number lines to help us understand fractions and if the are closer to 0, 1/2 or 1. The number lines were benchmarks to figure out how big the fraction is. Everyone had so much fun writing fractions using the number line. We really understood this concept well! Great job Grade 3s!

UOI: We reviewed the difference and similarities between fiction and non-fiction texts. We took up the Venn diagrams they completed before the break. Then, we started to explore the genre of HORROR! We discussed how horror/scary stories use your senses to make you visualize things or develop the feeling of fear. As a class, we reviewed what were the 5 senses and adjectives you can use to describe a scary setting. We looked at pictures of "scary settings" and began to brainstorm a story that we would revolve that scary setting.
