Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail. https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com

Music: Please see Mrs. McMillan's blog for more detail. www.mrsmcmillanmusic.blogspot.com
Inquiry into Language: We worked on Lesson 25 in our workbooks. We needed a reminder what were consonants and how to add -ed and -ing to words ending in a consonant.
Recess/Lunch

UOI: Today we started our soil experiment! We went outside to dig up some soil and place it into our jars. We added water and drew what we saw. Then we shook the jars!!! We drew what we saw in the jar after 5 minutes of the jar being still. Tomorrow we are going to continue to draw what we see in our jar.

Inquiry into Math: We started the lesson with a quick quiz on angles to see how we are doing with this concept. Once we were finished, we learned about Quadrilaterals! A quadrilateral is a figure with 4 sides. We started to explore different figures with our table groups and will continue tomorrow.

Recess/Lunch

Art's Night Dance Rehearsal: We worked with a choreographer on our dance! We will continue tomorrow.
Pie in the face: Poor Ms. Cass got pied in the face! Hopefully I'm not the next one!!!

Autism Awareness Month: We watched a video to better help us understand what it means. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtRYKjucDHk

Wear BLUE for $2 on
  World Autism Awareness Day
What is Blue for $2?
  • Across the world, schools are participating in Autism Awareness Day where wearing the colour blue celebrates inclusiveness, understanding and acceptance.
  • Wearing blue is in support of those who are on the Autism Spectrum. Donating a toonie provides you with the opportunity to wear blue on April 2nd to support Oakwood and everyone on the Autism Spectrum and their families.

Why is Blue for $2 important?
  • Wearing blue on World Autism Awareness Day shows your support and raises awareness of how we all should care about everyone on the Autism Spectrum.
What is Autism?
  • Autism impacts the way individuals communicate, understand other people and learn
  • Their senses are effected – either over stimulated or under stimulated (e.g., busy places might be really overwhelming or certain clothes might be uncomfortable)
  • As a result their emotional, social, developmental skills are impacted
What will the funds go towards?
  • All funds raised during Autism Awareness Month go towards much needed sensory equipment and other learning tools to support our student’s developmental needs.

Inquiry into Language: We practiced our student-led conference packages and then did our spelling test!

Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Math: We did a lot more practice with angles! We learned how to label them and practiced how to measure them. We work on a math package and had one on one check in to make sure we were lining up our protractor correctly.

Thursday March 28th, 2019

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail. https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com

Music: Please see Mrs. McMillan's blog for more detail. www.mrsmcmillanmusic.blogspot.com
Inquiry into Language: We did our OWA pre-assessment for Term 3!
Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Math: We learned about angles and how to use a protractor! We identified the four different types of angles: acute, right angle, obtuse and straight angles. The main concept for students to understand is how to identify whether an angle is greater than or less than a right angle. Students also learned how to use a protractor to measure angles. Some steps I encourage the students to follow to help them better identify the value of the angle they are measuring since it can get confusing with the two sets of numbers on a protractor are.
1) Put your angle marker on the angle you want to measure (the curved line)
2) Identify whether the angle is greater than or less than a right angle
3) Use your protractor to measure the angle.
** If you say your angle is less then a right angle, then your measurement should be less than 90 degrees. If you say it's greater than a right angle then your measurement should be greater than 90 degrees.
When using the protractor, students understand that they should line up the centre of the bottom of their protractor (where the little hole is) where the two lines meet to form the angle. In addition to this, one of the lines that form the angle need to be lined up with the solid black like at the bottom of their protractor that meets the 90 degree line.

UOI: Today we learned about composting! We read the articles together in class and then did some fun cut and paste activities. They were sent home for homework!

Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Language: Today we worked on our Student-Led Conference Package.
Reading Buddies: We read with our friends in Ms. King's class.

IB Binders: We organized our IB Binders!

Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Math: Today we learned about congruent figures. Congruent figures that are the same shape and same size! We learned the difference between similar and congruent figures. We watched a video to better help us understand the difference. Here is a link.

We completed a worksheet and some textbook questions.

UOI: Today we learned about how plants get nutrients from the soil! We learned about 3 important nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and how these effect plants.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: We learned about the texture and structure of soil. We learned soil is described by how much sand, silt and clay are in them. This will help us with our experiment tomorrow.
