Tuesday November 19th, 2019

Here is what we did today:

Science Fair Awards: We won FIRST PLACE!!!! Congratulations to my Grade 3s and all the other students who won!


Inquiry into Math: We learned about distributive properties today! This is just a fancy way of breaking apart a 2-digit number to multiple it by a 1-digit number. This was an introduction to the use of brackets within equations. It was important for them to understand that we always do the work within the brackets first and that it is extremely important to follow all of the steps!



Here are the steps:
This is the question 32 x 4
Step 1-- Break up the 2-digit number (or the bigger factor) into 2 addends (smaller numbers). Put those addends into a bracket in the form of an addition statement. The remaining of the original question should follow the bracket. Ex: (30 + 2) x 4
Step 2-- Further break apart the 2 addends into 2 separate brackets. Within the first bracket should be one addend multiplied by the other factor. Within the second bracket should be the second addend also multiplied by the other factor. These brackets should be separated by the addition symbol. Ex. (30 x 4) + (2 x 4)
Step 3-- Do the multiplication within the brackets! Ex: 120 + 8
Step 4-- Add those products together to get your final answer! Ex: 128

We also looked at how to breakdown a 1-digit number so we can use this strategy:


We practiced on the board together, then independently on the mini white boards. Once everyone completed their white board task we moved on to the worksheet. If not completed, it was sent for homework.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: Today we talked about stress and how to cope with the feeling of being stressed. We read about what is stress and things that can stress you. Everyone in the class shared one thing that made them feel stressed. We then talked about coping with stress and ways of doing that. They brainstormed in their table groups how to cope with stress. They watched a video that also helped explain stress, the affects it can have on a person and how to cope with stress.

Lastly, we looked at a list of positive affirmations and choose our favourite ones! We talked about why it is important to have a growth mindset and be positive. We each shared our favourite positive affirmation! For homework, they were asked to complete a reflection.

Recess/Lunch

Inquiry into Language: We continued to talk about the parts of the letter! We labeled an example of one of my letters. Then, we discussed rules and routines! We shared some of our rules and routines as a class. We wrote a letter together including some rules and routines. It is important to explain each rule to the reader so they understand why they must follow them. They worked on their own letter about their rules and routines for a friend who is coming over for a sleepover.
