Music: Please see Mr. Flower's blog for more detail

Language:We continued our Novel Study! "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We discussed how Sundays in the past are different than Sundays in the present day. Throughout this chapter we learn about how there are consequences to your actions. We completed a Cause and effect worksheet to assist us with understanding what were the consequences to the characters actions.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we reviewed rounding to estimate and front end estimation. Then we explored "The Better Way" to Estimate! There are four steps to complete this method:

Step 1: Use Front End Estimation on your numbers

Ex.   234 + 595
        200 + 500 = 700

Step 2: Round the tens and then add them!

Ex. 234 + 595
       34--> 30
       95--> 100
100 + 30 = 130

Step 3: Add the two sums together!

Ex. 130 + 700 = 830

Step 4: Check your answer!

Ex. 234 + 595 = 829
So your estimate was reasonable because it wasn't too high and wasn't too low!
We did quite a few examples and definitely thought this was "the better way" to estimate!

We proceed to learn about Friendly Numbers. These numbers are multiples or 10, 100 and 1000. We did some examples together and then worked on two questions independently.

For Friendly Numbers, look at the numbers you have and which one is closer to a multiple of 100?
Ex. 213 + 472
213 minus 13 is 200
So 200 is our Friendly Number

Now add the Friendly Number to your other number.
Ex. 200 + 472 = 672

From that sum now add back what you subtracted (**Note if they did addition in the first step it would be subtraction in this step-- both would give you the same result!)
Ex. 672 + 13 = 685

UOI:  We started building our Pioneer Homes! Our log cabins are looking fantastic!

Language:We continued our Novel Study! "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The students took turns reading the parts book and thoroughly enjoyed helping me read things out as I had no voice again today. We completed the comprehension worksheets together for the first few questions and then they had time to work on it independently to complete the Venn Diagram.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we learned about estimating sums. There was two ways that we focused on: Rounding and Front End Estimation. When rounding to estimate a sum: look at the place value of both numbers you are rounding. Are they the same place value? (Ex. adding two 3-digit numbers means you are rounding to the nearest 100) Then round both numbers and add them together to get your estimate.

IF the numbers you are rounding are not the same place value (Ex. A 2-digit plus a 3-digit number) then you round to the tens (the lower place value).
 Front End Estimation:
We loved this way of estimation! Look at the first digit of both numbers you are adding. Then you change the remaining digits to zero.

Music: Please see Mr. Flower's blog for more detail

Language:We continued our Novel Study! "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The students took turns reading the parts book and thoroughly enjoyed helping me read things out as I barely had a voice today. We completed the comprehension worksheets together for the first few questions and then they had time to work on it independently.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we started our lesson with a review of what we learned about yesterday. Once we corrected some of our homework, we continued with our lesson on comparing and ordering numbers. We did examples of how to use the symbols and write them in words/use our math language.
We then learned about how to use place value in order to help us put numbers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. We placed our numbers in a chart and started in the thousands column to compare the numbers. Which one was the greatest number? The biggest digit in the thousands column equals the biggest number. If the digits are identical then you must look to the next column to compare.
We played a place value dice game with a partner and compared then ordered the numbers we created. We had a lot of fun!

UOI: Lastly we worked on reading an article about "Inside a Pioneer's Home" together. As a class we took turns reading this article and worked together on the comprehension questions. We will continue tomorrow with looking for key words in the article to help us answer the comprehension questions. Please reinforce looking for key words when reading and answering questions at home.

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail

Language: We continued our Novel Study! "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The students made many connections to chapter and enjoyed "Grandpa and the Panther." We completed a worksheet to compliment the chapter we read. they had to draw and write a sentence about different events from the chapter.

Daily 5: We worked on our Cursive and reading with a partner.

Recess/Lunch

Math: We counted to practice our rounding! We took up yesterday's homework and did a couple of examples as a class on solving word problems. We practiced using place value and underlining the number we are rounding again as some of us were having trouble.

As an exit ticket, I put a word problem on the board and provide each group with chart paper. They had to show their work and be able to explain to me why they believe their answer is correct.

Once that was complete, the students had time to start their math worksheets on rounding to the nearest 10s, 100s and 1000s.

Recess/Lunch

UOI: Today we learned about the four types of pioneer homes! We read the article together and circled the key words that would help us with the comprehension worksheet. On the worksheet, there was statements describing each type of home. They had to use the key words to decide which description matched the four houses. We were able to describe each type of home; log cabin, plank house, stone house and sod house. We vote on which type of house we'd like to live in and why as well!

Language:We continued our Novel Study! "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The students took turns reading the parts book and will continue chapter 2 tomorrow.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we started our lesson with a review activity of what we learned about yesterday.
In partners students had to identify what the number was based on the clues provided. Each group had to represent their number in two of the five ways we learned yesterday. They worked really well together and earned house points for the fantastic cooperation.

After the activity, the students learned about rounding to the nearest tens, hundreds and thousands using a number line and place value. We began by looking at what it means when we round to the nearest 10 by identifying the two tens our number falls between. (Ex. the number 37 falls between 30 and 40). We were able to use this strategy for rounding to the nearest 100 and 1000 as well.

We also looked at place value rounding. When rounding to the nearest ten underline the number in the tens column to remind us of the place value we are looking at. (Ex. 34 -- 34) Now look at the number in the ones column and ask yourself "I am rounding up or rounding down?" **Use the rounding roller coaster to help** Once that is determined then if you can round it! (Ex. 34 --> 30)

You can follow these steps for rounding to the nearest 100 and 1000. Remember that if a digit is infront of your underlined digit you do not need to change it! (Ex. Rounding to the nearest 100 with the number 2345 -- 2345 --> 2300) To help us with this each of us has the rounding roller coaster in our duo tangs.

It's very important that we read and remember what we are ROUNDING to. During class some of us forgot that we had to round to the nearest 10 and began rounding to the nearest 100. We need to ensure we read the instructions at the top of our page. Highlighting this helped us remember what we were rounding to.

UOI: Lastly we worked on reading an article about Clearing The Land together. As a class we took turns reading this article and worked with partners on the comprehension questions. We will continue tomorrow with looking for key words in the article to help us answer the comprehension questions.

Recess/Lunch

Gym: Please see Ms. Yustin's blog for more detail. We did a fantastic job at changing today!

Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail

Language: Today we started our Novel Study! "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is such an amazing book and the kids are already loving it! We read the first chapter of the book. The children began working on a worksheet of how the house is described in chapter one looks like. They took them home to colour them in.

Recess/Lunch

Math:. Today we learned about whole number to 10,00. We created a chart that separates 4-digit numbers by thousands, hundreds, tens and ones! We wrote out the numbers in standard form (just the number itself ex: 1345), base ten name (ex: 1 thousand 3 hundreds 4 tens 5 ones), in words (like you are reading the number out loud ex: one thousand three hundred and forty-five) and expanded form (1000+300+40+5). We did multiple examples on the board and worked on a chart in our duo tangs. All the students seemed to really be grasping this concept and were excited to learn more.

UOI: We welcomed Ms. Foti's class to discuss about how the Pioneers traveled from their home countries to North America. We took a look at the globe and used yarn to outline their journey. We discussed modes of transportation and how much it has changed. Many of us agreed that we definitely could not do a 3 month boat ride! We read a book together about how people traveled through periods of time. We came up with some great questions and connections to the book.

Recess/Lunch

Daily Five: We used this period to practice our cursive and start our Spelling Lesson 1 activities. We could also use this time to work on our Novel Study worksheets and Math worksheets to lessen our homework.

Agenda:

Whatever in class work that was not complete in the allotted 40 minute work periods was assigned for homework.
Just a reminder please do not work ahead in the duo tangs, they are set up with in class work and homework for the upcoming week. Thank you for your cooperation.
