Math: We enforced our learning of place value with math activity centres today! There were three separate activities that the children were able to rotate with their groups till. The class favourite was the expanded form accordions!

UOI: Today, we continued working on our PSA planning. The student worked in their groups and began to write their scripts and practice.

Language: We watch videos and discussed the meaning of Orange Shirt Day. We learned about what took place at those residential schools. We designed T-shirts that say “Every Child Matters” to decorate the school tomorrow.

Recess/Lunch

Daily Five: We began exploring the Italian culture! We watched videos of traditional dances and looked at pictures of traditional clothing. It was a fun sharing period!

UOI: Today, we learned about what a PSA is. We took a look at multiple examples of PSAs and discussed what the purpose was for them. We discussed each example in depth and spoke about what they will be doing over the next three days.

Recess/Lunch

Math: We talked about place value to 1000 today! We talked about three types of numbers: standard form (regular numbers), base ten name (The number of blocks used using base ten blocks) and expanded form (The amounts added up). We did several examples together in which we started with one of these types of numbers and had to find a different number ( E.g. Find the standard form when given the expanded form) Next we did some textbook questions. Everyone seems very confident in this new concept!

Language/Daily Five:We continued to work on our OWA post assessment. For the students that completed their assessment, they were able to silently read to themselves or a partner.

UOI:Today we continued our discussion on the influence of the media. We began our lesson with saying a positive message to a partner and then we spoke about how that makes us feel. We took a look at quite a few examples of advertisements that were promoting a certain lifestyle or unhealthy habit. We spoke about how those advertisements could make someone feel. They told me that all people are different and it is not nice for the media to say not so nice things or make people feel like they don’t belong. The important take home message from today was to be critical of the media and not believe everything that they say.

Math: We began our new unit today: Whole Numbers and Place Value! We create a chart that separates 3-digit numbers by hundreds, tens and ones! We wrote out the numbers in standard form (just the number itself ex: 345), base ten name (ex: 3 hundreds 4 tens 5 ones) and expanded form (300+40+5). We did multiple examples on the board and quite a few from the textbook as well. All the students seemed to really be grasping this concept and were excited to learn more.

UOI: Miss. Ross’ class joined us as we watched an advertisement that brought up the discussion on how the media influences boys and girls. We spoke about self-esteem, self-confidence, the negative and positive images that portrayed in the media. Comments such as: “Like a Girl” or “Be a Man” were discussed and we were able to understand how those comments could have a negative impact on someone.  

Terry Fox Run! OUR CLASS RAISED $63 !!!!

UOI: After the run, we brought the classes together and spoke about how we should be critical of what we see on the media and stay true to ourselves. As a group, we all brainstormed positive messages that we could use to create our Positivity Posters. As an activity, the students created Positivity Posters! Each poster had a positive message and drawing that we hope to share outside of our classrooms.

UOI/Language: We continued to work on writing our persuasive speech. We began to write them in our Language Journals. Each student was given a handout out with Transition Words that can be used in each section of their persuasive speech. Whatever was not completed in class was given for homework.

Hello Parents and Guardians,

I have very important news to share! We now have RAZ Kids!

RAZ Kids is an online platform where kids go to learn and teachers go to manage. This dynamic resource allows students to access all their digital learning materials and tools in one place, and provides teachers with an all-in-one management hub to roster students, create online assignments, review and score student submissions, and access individual and class-wide reporting.

UOI/Language: We started to work on writing a persuasive speech. We looked at transition words as well as persuasive words and phrases. Each sentence should begin with a persuasive word or phrase. You can also add them throughout the speech. We discussed the use of Hooks in persuasive speech and worked on a rough copy of a new topic for a persuasive speech using an OREO outline.

International Day!

Hello Parents and Guardians,

I am happy to announce that we will be learning about and representing: ITALY!



Every student was sent home with what they are responsible for in terms of research. I look forward to everyone collaborating together for this event!

International will be on October 5th!

WELCOME BBQ!

Wednesday is the last day to hand in your form for the welcome BBQ! 

This is going to be a fun event for all SJA and Oakwood families to participate in!

Food is available for purchase in advance for the following prices: hot dog combo (chicken or beef) $6 each, hamburger combo $6 each, veggie burger combo $8 each. Each combo is served with a bag of chips and drink. Please write the quantity of combos in the box as well as the total cost. The BBQ will take place in the recess area.

Please send your BBQ order with cash or submit payment through Freshbooks by Wednesday,September 27th, 2017.

Uniforms

Hello Parent(s)/Guardians:


We would like to send a friendly reminder to all parent(s)/guardian(s) to please label your child(ren)'s uniform pieces to help us retrieve items in a more efficient manner and to reduce the number of lost uniform pieces. All unidentified uniform pieces have been place in our lost and found box located outside of the gymnasium area, and all identified pieces have been returned to the appropriate students. 


We are also kindly asking all parent(s)/guardian(s) to please check your child's uniform labels to ensure that your child has not accidentally taken home someone else's uniform piece. If this is the case, please return the uniform piece to you child's homeroom teacher.

Orange Shirt Day

Hello Everyone,

As someone of you may already know we are honoring Orange Shirt Day on Friday September 29th, 2017. 

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. 

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.  (www.orangeshirtday.org )

UOI/Language: Today we worked what are prefixes and suffixes. We discussed it as a class and the students had a chance to work on some worksheets as practice.

Daily Five: Students were given this time to read either independently or with a friend.

UOI: Today we analyzed an advertisement. We reviewed what we should ask in order to break down the advertisement:

What is the product being advertised?
Who is responsible?
Who is the target audience?
What is the advertisement making people want?
What are the advertising techniques that have been used?

The students had a chance to analyze an advertisement with a partner.

Math:. Today we reviewed some of the concepts we learned over the past 3 weeks. The students did some examples from the textbook and then began to work on their Unit 1 Math Review Booklet. All the questions on the test on Monday will be very similar to the review, we will just be changing the numbers.

1st, 2nd and 3rd !

Math:. Today we took a break for subtraction and addition equations to learn about ordinal numbers! An ordinal number is the place of the number. For example, 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd. We did several examples together involving them standing in a line and determining which place there were in. We did some examples from the textbook involving which spot several months are in and letters in the alphabet are in. The students understood this concept very well and had a lot of fun during the lesson. We complete one worksheet in class and another was assigned as homework.

UOI/Language: Today we worked on the good copy of our persuasive letters from our OREO rough draft. If anyone did not complete it during the class time, it was assigned for homework.

For students who completed all of their work, they were able to work on an Oreo Matching Game. There was 5 completed Oreos (Persuasive Speeches) that they had to put all the parts in order. The children had a blast working on this activity and really understood the concept well.

UOI: We worked on our good copies for our advertisements. We ensured it followed the outlined success criteria. Whoever did not complete the good copy had it assigned for homework. The success criteria is:

Math:. Today we continued to talk about equations involving subtraction. Next, we did some examples together involving two math problems on either side. It is important that children are showing their work underneath the question. We spoke about our subtraction “Rule of Thumb.” We did some examples together involving two math problems on either side. It is important that children are showing their work underneath the question. 

I provided each student with a hundred chart and a subtraction equation hint sheet to glue into their math notebooks. The hint sheet has a step by step guide on how to solve a subtraction equation and how to see if both sides of a subtraction question is equal.

Here are the steps that I gave them to complete their homework tonight.

The hundreds chart helps a lot. Please use them if you are having trouble. Please make sure you return your math journal tomorrow so we can use the hundreds chart again.

Steps to filling in a blank in a subtraction question:

1.    What are the answers to each side? Write them down underneath

2.    Remember our rules of thumb

a.    If you have a little number and the answer you ADD!

b.    If you have a big number and the answer you SUBTRACT!

3.    Rearrange the question if you have to on the side of your page

4.    Rewrite the equation with the final answer

Example:

13 -  ______= 15 – 7

                        8

13-8=5

13-5=15-7

If you are trying to figure out two questions are equal:

1.    What are the answers to each side? Write them down underneath

2.    Are they equal? If they are not write “They are not equal”

3.    What number should you make it equal to? Decide which side.

4.    Determine what the equation needs to be in order to make it equal

a.    One side needs to stay the same

b.    The other side cannot change completely, change on number in order to make the equation equal

c.     If they are having trouble, rewrite the question using our rules of thumb

 13 - 5   and 15 – 4

                   8                  11

They are not equal.

                15-8=7

  13 -  5 = 15 – 7

Remember to ALWAYS rewrite the final answer in an equation!!

We worked on worksheets together in class. Whatever questions from the worksheets that were not completed in class, were assigned for homework.

UOI/Language: Today we reviewed the acronyms OREO. Opinion, reason, evidence and opinion. The reason and evidence are repeated three times for three reasons (opinion 1. reason, evidence 2. reason, evidence 3. reason, evidence and restate the opinion). We spoke about the difference between a weak and a strong argument. As a class, we competed an OREO about school uniforms ensuring all of our reasons were different and were supported by strong examples. We began writing a rough copy of an OREO for the topic of should students have homework. The students had to check in with me to ensure that we were providing strong reasons with examples that supported them. If anyone did not complete it, it was assigned for homework.

Daily Five: Students were given this time to read either independently or with a friend, complete either their math worksheet or their Oreo rough copy.

UOI: We reviewed our success criteria for our advertisement. Each student began creating their rough copies. They had to label their rough copies with each part of the success criteria to show me and get approval for their good copy. Whoever did not complete the rough copy had it assigned for homework. The success criteria is:

1. 2-3 ad techniques (no more than 4)
2. Purpose of the ad is stated
3. Company name
4. Logo
5. Slogan
