International Day: We completed our board!!

Math: Today we learned about how to properly use the greater than, less than and equal to symbol. We remember that the open end of the symbol always faces the bigger number; the alligator always wants to eat the bigger number because its more meat! We practiced many questions that made us decide which symbol to use. Then we practiced word problems, the students were instructed to use place value charts to help them figure out which number was bigger.

Ex: George has 1340 yugioh cards. Tommy has 1433 yugioh cards. Who has more cards? How do you know?

First step: make a place value chart and place the numbers inside.

Thousands
Hundreds
Tens
Ones
1
3
4
0
1
4
3
3

Look at the thousands column first, which number is the bigger? If the numbers are the same then you have to look towards the next column to determine your next step.

Then look at your hundreds column, which number is bigger? 4! That means that entire number is the bigger number: 1433.

The next step is to write it out:

1340 < 1433

1340 is less than 1433. Tommy has more yugioh cards than George. I know this because the thousand columns are the same but when I looked at the hundreds column I realized that 4 is a bigger number than 3 so 1433 is the larger number.
