French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Agendas/Morning Meeting

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

UOI/Language: Students learned about contractions today! We watched a video of words and their matching contractions. The students were separated into groups and each group was given an activity to complete. One center had the students making accordion contractions; they wrote out the two words and fold the paper on a way to make the two words change into the contraction. Another center had a matching contraction sheet. The final station had a contraction matching puzzle. Once the centers were complete, the students worked on a verb worksheet.

Recess/Lunch

Music: Please check Mr. Oliver’s blog for more details.

Math: Today we explored different addition strategies! We learned about doubles, near doubles and sums of ten (make 10).

Doubles: When the two numbers you are adding are the same.

Ex.     2 + 2 = 4

Near Doubles: When you use your doubles strategies to help you add numbers that are close together.

Ex.     2 + 3 =
          We know 2 + 2 = 4
          We know 2 + 1 = 3
So,  2 + 2 + 1 = 5

Sum of Ten (Make 10): We know and love our 10s! Any easy way to add is by making one of your numbers 10 and add the rest from there.

Ex.    7 + 5
Think: 7 + 3 = 10 plus another 2
        7 + 5 = 12

** Now if the number is a double digit number we came up with a fun strategy to solve it!

Ex.    22 + 8
Pretend the ones columns (the 2 and the 8) are getting married!
So,    2 + 8 = 10
Now since the 2 left 22 they are a lonely empty tens.... they turned into 20!
The 20 decided to marry the sum of  2 and 8, 10!
sooooooooo 20 + 10 = 30
Which means 22 + 8 = 30

The students loved the funny strategy we came up with and really understood the concepts well. We did examples on the board and did practice math games in groups!

Recess/Lunch.

UOI: Their summative project was introduced and the students had time to start planning. Please do not complete more of the package at home. We are working on this during class time! The first page (the detailed outline/summary of the project) and the rubric may stay at home.
