Here is what we did today:

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more detail. https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com

Language: Today we started Lesson 3 in our Spelling Workbooks. After we completed some of the lesson, the Grade 3s completed their first Language Drill! Language Drills focus on key concepts that help us with our writing; for example: fact vs opinion, writing in complete sentences and meaning of words. We continued our Novel Study, "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. After our reading, the students had time to work on comprehension questions.

Math:. To start our lesson, we reviewed how to estimate to subtract by solving a word problem using a chart. We started the question together and then completed the last two parts independently. Once we completed that activity we moved on to our lesson today. Today we learned about "Making Friendly" numbers to subtract! We complete many examples on the board and really seem to be getting the hand of it.

We focused on looking at which number is closer to a multiple of 100. By closer we mean 10 away or 10 over a multiple of 100 (Ex. 210 is 200 plus 10 more or 199 is only 1 away from 200). Then we focused on two methods of making our friendly numbers for subtraction.

For the first method, whatever you do to one number to get to the friendly number you must do to the other number as well. So if you add 1 to get 199 to 200 you must do that as well to the "not-so-friendly" number as well. Then you subtract the two new numbers to get your answer!

For the second method, we look at which number is our friendly number and stretch them out. (Ex. 210 is 200 and 10) Then we subtract the "not-so-friendly" number by the hundreds first to give you a difference. Then you take that difference and subtract the other half of the friendly number.

UOI:  We participated in an activity with Ms. Foti's class about making butter!! We made our butter by shaking whipping cream in a mason jar. Wow did we ever learn how long 2 minutes really is! Then we got to eat the butter with crackers. While we made butter we discussed how Pioneer schools were different from ours. Take a look at us shaking the whipping cream. SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE!
